Principles

The seven guiding principles of PRINCE2 ® for managing projects effectively, include ‘continued business justification’, ‘learn from experience’, ‘define roles, responsibilities and relationships’, manage by stages’, ‘manage by exception’, ‘focus on products’, ‘tailor to suit the project environment’. This knowledge will support you to learn how they shape the framework and support project managers to make effective decisions and manage and deliver projects successfully.

Practices

The seven practices of PRINCE2® include developing a business case, organising effective teams, creating plans, managing risks, addressing issues, creating plans and monitoring progress. These are fundamental throughout the project lifecycle.

Processes

The PRINCE2® methodology covers the seven processes for delivery of projects, from starting up and initiating a project, controlling stages and managing product delivery, managing stage boundaries, closing a project and directing the project. This includes a process model walkthrough to support the learning process.

How to tailor PRINCE2 ® Project Management

The Practitioner course covers how to apply and tailor the principles, practices, and processes in different contexts. This will support you to use the methodology with confidence and support you with the tools to manage projects of different sizes and complexities and ensure a focused and integrated approach.

How to establish effective project controls

The Practitioner course will cover how to establish effective project controls, how to manage risks and how to ensure that projects align with business strategic objectives. This will cover how to establish controls for quality assurance, progress monitoring, adapting plans and which provides you with the confidence to maintain control over projects.

The Practitioner course will cover how to embed the PRINCE2 ® Project Management practices within your own organisation, with supporting tools and techniques for long-term project success. Who is the PRINCE2® Project Management Foundation and Practitioner (Version 7) for?
This qualification is aimed at project managers and aspiring project managers. It is also relevant to other key staff involved in the design, development, and delivery of projects, including:
Project Board members (e.g. Senior Responsible Owners), Team Managers (e.g. Product Delivery Managers), Project Assurance (e.g. Business Change Analysts), Project Support (e.g. Project and Programme Office personnel) and operational line managers/staff.

Prerequisites
PRINCE2® Project Management Foundation (Version 7) – There are no formal prerequisites for undertaking this course. All potential candidates will be required to complete a self-assessment prior to undertaking the course.
PRINCE2® Project Management Practitioner (Version 7) – You must hold a valid certification in a relevant and specified project management qualification. Refer to the FAQs on this page for the complete list.

60 minutes, multiple choice, closed book, 60% pass mark, online exam via remote proctor.

Exam overview – PRINCE2® Project Management Foundation (Version 7)

Material allowed	None	This is a ‘closed book’ exam. The PRINCE2® Managing Successful Project Official Book, should be used for study, but is NOT permitted to be used in the exam.
Exam Duration	60 minutes	Candidates taking the exam in a language that is not their native or working language may be awarded 25% extra time, i.e. 75 minutes in total.
Number of marks	60 marks	There are 60 questions, each worth 1 mark. There is no negative marking.
Pass mark	36 marks	You will need to get 36 questions correct (60%) to pass the exam.
Level of thinking	Bloom’s levels 1 & 2	“Bloom’s level” describes the type of thinking needed to answer the question. For Bloom’s level 1 questions, you need to recall information about the PRINCE2 method. For Bloom’s level 2 questions, you need to show understanding of these concepts.
Question types	Standard, Missing word, List & Negative	The questions are all ‘multiple choice’. For the ‘standard’ questions, you have a question and four answer options. ‘Negative’ questions are ‘standard’ question in which the stem is negatively worded. For the ‘missing word’ questions, there is a sentence with a word missing and you must select the missing word from four options. For the ‘list’ questions, there is a list of four statements, and you must select the two correct statements.

150 minutes, scenario based multiple choice, open book, 60% pass mark, online exam via remote proctor 

Exam overview – PRINCE2® Project Management Practitioner (Version 7)

Material allowed	PRINCE2 Official Book.	This is an ‘open book’ exam. The PRINCE2 7 Managing Successful Projects Official Book, should be used (and you can make notes inside the book), but no other material is allowed.
Exam Duration	2 hours 30 minutes.	Candidates taking the exam in a language that is not their native or working language may be awarded 25% extra time, i.e. 188 minutes in total.
Number of marks	70 marks.	There are 70 (part) questions, each worth 1 mark. There is no negative marking.
Pass mark	42 marks.	You will need to get 42 (part) questions correct to pass the exam.
Level of thinking	Bloom’s level 3 & 4	“Bloom’s levels” describes the type of thinking needed to answer the question. For Bloom’s level 3 questions, you need to apply your knowledge to a situation. For Bloom’s level 4 questions, you need to analyse the information provided and reason whether a course of action is effective/appropriate.
Exam format	Scenario, additional information, and questions	You should read the ‘Project Scenario’ which gives background information about the project and the questions apply to. For at least one question, you will need to use the ‘Additional Information’ which gives information about people who may be working on the project.
Question types	Classic and matching	The questions are all ‘multiple choice’. There is a short description of a situation, and then a question. For the ‘classic’ questions (1mark), you have a question and four options (A, B, C, D). For the ‘matching’ questions (3 marks), you have 3 pieces of information, and you have to choose an answer from a list of 5 or 6 options.

What is PRINCE2® Project Management Foundation (Version 7)

The purpose of the Foundation qualification is to confirm that a candidate has sufficient knowledge and understanding of the PRINCE2® method to be able to work effectively with, or as a member of, a project management team working within an environment supporting PRINCE2®. The Foundation qualification is also a prerequisite for the Practitioner qualification.

What is PRINCE2® Project Management Practitioner (Version 7)

The purpose of the Practitioner qualification is to confirm whether the candidate has achieved sufficient understanding of how to apply and tailor PRINCE2® in a scenario situation. A successful Practitioner candidate should, with suitable direction, be able to start applying the method to a real project but may not be sufficiently skilled to do this appropriately for all situations. Their individual project management expertise, complexity of the project and the support provided for the use of PRINCE2® in their work environment will all be factors which impact what the Practitioner can achieve.

Does PRINCE2® Project Management Foundation and Practitioner (Version 7) expire?

Yes, you have to renew your certification within three years of the award date to remain current. There are multiple ways to recertify, more information regarding the options can be found on the PeopleCert website.
