APM® Project Management Qualification (PMQ)
Who is the APM® Project Management Qualification (PMQ) for?
This qualification is aimed at project managers who have 2-3 years’ experience of leading and managing projects. This is for experienced professionals who are looking to advance their career.
It is also relevant to other key staff involved in the design, development, and delivery of projects, including:
Project Board members (e.g. Senior Responsible Owners), Team Managers (e.g. Product Delivery Managers), Project Assurance (e.g. Business Change Analysts), Project Support (e.g. Project and Programme Office personnel) and operational line managers/staff.
Prerequisites
There are no formal prerequisites for undertaking this course. All potential candidates will be required to complete a self-assessment prior to undertaking the course. This will ensure that this determines the course is right for you. This is the APM competence framework and outlines the competencies for effective project management.
You will most likely:
- Be working in a project environment
- Have two to three years of experience as a project professional or be actively undertaking a project management apprenticeship or degree
- Be looking to progress your career and improve your employability
- Be interested in learning about all areas of project management and not a particular methodology
If you don’t already have any of the experiences referred above, you might want to take the APM® Project Fundamentals Qualifications before studying for the APM® Project Management Qualification.

2.5 hours with an optional 30-minute break, 40 questions worth a total of 90 marks. The exam is split into two parts. The break time can be taken between parts. The break time is in addition to the 2.5-hour exam time.

Each exam paper includes different questions and may assess various parts of the syllabus. To ensure fairness, APM avoid setting a consistent pass mark for all exams, as some versions may be a bit easier or more challenging than others. Therefore, you may see a different pass mark depending on which exam paper you sit. |

What is APM® Project Management Qualification (PMQ)
The purpose of the Project Management Qualification is to confirm that a candidate has sufficient knowledge and understanding of the APM® method to be able to work effectively with, or as a member of, a project management team working within an environment supporting APM®. The APM® Project Management Qualification is designed for people who directly have some knowledge, understanding or experience of project management and are looking to move deeper into a project management career.
How long does it take to complete APM® Project Management Qualification (PMQ)?
Please be advised that it is recommended that a minimum of 40 hours duration for APM® Project Management Qualification pre-course e-learning takes place prior to the Virtual Online Classroom course. You then need to complete 40 hours of additional online learning resources before sitting your exam.
Please be advised that this is a 5 Day Virtual Live Online Classroom Course. You have 12 months from the date of issue to take your APM® Project Management Qualification (PMQ) Exam.
The Self-Study course covers the full content of the course in a digital format. There are also directed development resources to support you to be able to apply this in practice within the role. This consists of 40 hours of self-paced learning and 40 hours of additional online learning resources.
What is the format of the APM® Project Management Qualification (PMQ) exam?
The exam is 2.5 hours long with an optional 30-minute break. It will test your project management knowledge through four new question types:
- Multiple response (20 questions, each worth 1 mark)
- Select from the list (5 questions, each worth 2 marks)
- Short responses (5 questions, each worth 2 marks)
- Long responses (10 questions, each worth 5 marks)
APM® recommends a minimum of 75 hours of learning to ensure that you are fully prepared for the exam.
